Environmental Reliability Testing

The microelectronics reliability task is increasingly challenging as more complex processes and products must be developed in shorter time-scales and reliability must be delivered in the first, and often only, iteration of process/product development. For complex processes or products this can only be achieved by integrating design for reliability (DfR) at the earliest stage of development. This, in turn, depends strongly on a thorough understanding of the materials and processes used in fabrication and manufacture. It is also vital in DfR to close the reliability loop: environmental reliability testing must be carried out and timely failure or product analysis plays a critical role in feeding information back to designers.

The original environmental reliability test facilities at Tyndall were established for the European Space agency under the Microelectronics Technology Support Laboratory (MTSL) programme and can carry out testing to space standards. Since then, a number of additional investments have helped to enhance the facility and have broadened the range of equipment so  that a comprehensive suite of services is available. All of the principal test chambers can be automatically controlled and continuous biasing & monitoring of the devices under test can be carried out.

Tyndall offers a rapid turn-around test service which meets the requirements of international reliability standards. This is backed up by extensive expertise in the selection and execution of appropriate reliability test methods and in the specification of reliability qualification programmes for new products.

Reliability test capabilities available at the Tyndall Laboratory include:
