Photonics Theory Group


Major advances in photonics come both from the development of new materials systems and improved fundamental understanding. Our research focuses on some of the most promising emerging materials areas and device concepts for next generation devices, including:

III-V Quantum Wells and Dots 

III-Nitride materials

Complex Networks

Dilute Nitrides

Discrete Mode Lasers



We investigate the electronic structure, as well as gain and loss mechanisms in these and related material systems. We also investigate how the photon mode structure can be engineered through a variety of different approaches. The research is theory-driven but with significant experimental component. It spans basic science through to investigations of fundamental processes limiting present day devices, and includes design and modelling of new and optimised devices.
