Tyndall National Institute at University College, Cork wishes to invite applications for the position of Researcher.

The Photonics Packaging Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for an exciting position as Postdoctoral Researcher in the new Integrated Photonics Packaging Pilot Line. Managed by Tyndall, the Pilot Line consists of a world-class packaging infrastructure distributed between key European research institutes and companies, addressing a wide range of advanced photonic packaging requirements which are capable of scaling to large volumes. The Pilot Line is a major initiative funded by the European Commission to develop a unique capability in Europe to support the emerging needs of European industry. Application markets to be addressed by the Pilot Line include telecommunications, medical devices, point-of-care biosensors, and the internet of things.

The postdoctoral researcher will take responsibility for developing number of key technology demonstrators used to showcase capabilities of the Pilot Line. Technology demonstrators include; fully packaged photonic devices for communication, medical diagnostics and sensing applications. The work involves design, packaging and supporting in testing these technology demonstrators. Experience in the field of photonics and/or microelectronics is essential, with additional experience in the design, fabrication and packaging of devices highly desirable. Much of the research will be orientated towards industry applications and markets, so the candidate should display a preference to collaborate with both academic and industry partners. Training on advanced photonic packaging techniques will be provided to ensure the selected candidate can perform their role effectively.


  • Support in the development of key technology demonstrators used to showcase capabilities of the Photonic Packaging Pilot Line. Much of this will involve work in Tyndall’s photonic packaging laboratory to design and package the demonstrators, and collaborate with Pilot Line partners to support fabrication and testing of the technology demonstrators.
  • Optical, electrical, thermal and mechanical packaging of photonic demonstrators using the extensive capabilities in Tyndall’s photonic packaging laboratory.
  • Support with the preparation of reports regarding the development of Pilot Line technology demonstrators.
  • Travel to project meetings (in Europe) and support with the preparation of material for project meetings.


  • PhD degree specialising in photonics or microelectronics.
  • Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Experience testing photonic and/or microelectronic devices.
  • Experience presenting your research at conferences.
  • Experience writing technical papers and reports.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work within a technical project team.
  • An ability to manage multiple project activities and meet project timelines.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Researcher €36,488 - €43,394.  In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
